Studies in Islamic Civilization draws upon the works of Western scholars to make the case that without the tremendous contribution of the Muslim world there would have been no Renaissance in Europe. For almost a thousand years Islam was arguably one of the leading civilizations of the world spanning a geographic area greater than any other.   The book explores how Islamic civilization began to unravel under colonial rule, as its institutions, laws, and economies were often replaced by inadequate modern equivalents. Allawi also examines the backlash expressed through the increasing religiosity of Muslim societies and the spectacular rise of political Islam and its terrorist offshoots.

Included are prominent authors who have made studies concerning Islam, the religion and its civilization, and the culture of Muslim included are those studies of Islam produced by Muslim authors meant primarily for a Muslim audience.   Seyyed Hossein Nasr, a Professor in Islamic Studies at George Washington University, discusses his book "Islam: Religion, History, and Civilization," published by HarperSanFrancisco.
